Upgrade instructions - ICT4 Life 2009

Problem:
Early releases of ICT 4 Life (prior to ActiveTeach 1 v1.2, ActiveTeach 2 v1.1, ActiveTeach 3 v1.1) have known issues which can be identified as:

  • Log-in difficulties due to lack of focus on the text entry fields
  • Database corruption caused by transient loss of connection.
  • Database corruption due to improperly set permissions.
  • Multiple instances of shared data could be configured when setting up client installations.
  • Clear-text administrator password stored in text file

Solution:
Upgrade your current installation of ActiveTeach:

  1. You must update the program files installed as ActiveTeach 1, 2 and/or 3.
  2. You must also upgrade the shared database before using the ActiveTeach.

Upgrading your existing ICT 4 Life installation
Please read these notes in their entirety before proceeding.

ICT 4 Life has been upgraded to allow integrated management of the three stages of the course, with additional data and user-management tools.

Upgrading each existing ICT 4 Life installation involves replacing files in each ICT 4 Life ActiveTeach application folder, and running the Upgrade Tool on each existing shared data folder (i.e. containing a folder named 'AssessmentDatabase') – where the user data is recorded. Do not process any unique instances of Assessment Database unless you have created a backup copy.

Please note: a database merging tool has been developed and is now available from this article:

 http://strapb06.pearsonbroadband.com/kbase/idx/88/256/article/
With this merge tool you will be able to merge Stage 2 (Year 8) data into the central database. If you intend to do this, please do not set the Stage 2 pupils up in the central database: keep using the databases separately, and merge them in one step.

If you decide *not* to use the merge tool you can either:

  •  Upgrade each database as shown below (repeating Step 2 to update the separate databases), link the different applications to them separately, and administer them separately

    OR

  •  Add your users from the other years and stages to the existing upgraded Year 7 database using the new tools provided. The application now manages all users across the three stages in one database.

Regardless of the use of this merge tool, you should upgrade the databases and applications as below.

Procedure for upgrade - important: the following steps must be followed in order.

Step 1

Create back-up copies of your application and related AssessmentDatabase folders. Retain these copies until you are satisfied that your installation has been upgraded and users can log in once more.

Please note: some schools have files in their AssessmentDatabase shared data folders with filenames, including the file path, that are more than the 255 characters long because pupils have, for example, submitted their entire My Documents folder as evidence for a task (folders may be uploaded in some instances where an aggregation of files is required). You may well have difficulty copying these folders as the file length is not supported by DOS. If your folder does not copy, please review the folder structure - isolating any files or folders which cause difficulty - copy them into an alternate archive location and delete them from the build. A useful free tool that may be used for assessing your structure is Parhelia Tools 'PathScanner' (http://www.parhelia-tools.com/products/pathscanner/PathScanner.aspx) Please satisfy yourself that this tool is safe for you to use as it is a third party application with no affiliation with or support from Pearson Education.

Files temporarily removed can then (if required) be re-submitted via the Teachers’ Assess interface (using the View my pupils’ uploaded work screen) or through the new Master Administration tools (using the View and Manage Users main menu item and the View files, folders and access records screen – see the User Guides for more details).

Step 2

  • Download and extract the following file: Upgrade_Database (3.6 MB) - use Winzip or other file-archiving utility to extract the content.
  • Open the Upgrade Tool folder and run the file Upgrade_Tool.exe.
  • Select the folder where the AssessmentDatabase for ActiveTeach 1 resides , and allow the tool to process the data.

It will take a few minutes to add additional fields to each of the user profiles. Do not attempt to interrupt the process.
Quit the Upgrade tool after processing the AssessmentDatabase folder, then re-run the process for any remaining AssessmentDatabase folders.

Step 3

  • Download and extract the following file: ActiveBook 1 updater (29.9 MB) - use Winzip or other file-archiving utility to extract the content.
  • Copy the contained Updates folder, along with the SelfUpdater.bat into the ActiveTeach 1 directory.
    - To locate your installation directory, right-click the ActiveTeach shortcut and 'Get properties', click the 'Shortcut' tab and then 'Find Target'
  • Run the SelfUpdater.bat to:
    • archive the old shared-data configuration file (no longer required)
    • replace the updated files
    • set all files to read only

You may open the .bat file in Notepad to review operation if required.
  • Repeat this step with ActiveBook 2 updater, and ActiveBook 3 updater (each 16.3 MB.)

The SelfUpdater.bat will seek the old configuration file to ensure it is processing the correct directory - if not found, check that you are running the SelfUpdater.bat alongside the Updates folder within the installation directory for the correct ActiveTeach instance - and that the installation being upgraded is configured for shared database access.

 Step 4

Open the application and log in with the username master and the password mict4dbm (MICT4DBM)

Note: if you are unable to log in with these details, it is because the shared data configuration file remains in the application root. Remove the file ICT4Life ActiveTeach 1_ICT4Life_ActiveTeach 1.xml Doing so will return the application to the default password setting (master/mict4dbm and Admin, Admin), and allow you to re-set the AssessmentDatabase shared data folder location.

·         Click on the Assess tab in the application, then open the Administration and Settings screen.

·         Select the location of the AssessmentDatabase you have updated in the Shared Folder browse field.

·         Set the school name, Quick Launch status  and default master administrator password as before.

Step 5

If you have installed ICT 4 Life at multiple locations, you will need to update the application files at each, but linking each to the new database is a separate process:

1.       Log in to ‘satellite’ applications using the username admin and the password admin. This logs you in as a local administrator with restricted controls.

2.       In the Assess area, you will see there are just three menu items. Go to the Administration and Settings  screen.

3.       In the browse field, go to the AssessmentDatabase shared data area and select the ICT4Life_Database.info there. This will associate each application with the correct database without the risk of creating a new one.

 Upgraded DB

 4.       Re-set the local administrator password to prevent unauthorised access.

Your Installation should now be upgraded to 1.1 content and data management (1.2 for ActiveTeach 1) and operate as expected with all users.
